My preferred method for natural dreadlock creation at Fiercelocks is called a dread perm. I have also used the Dollylocks Organic Locking System with great success. The images above were all taken on dreads that were created prior to Dollylocks organic locking system and they all turned out to be fantastic dreadlocks as they matured. Like lots of technology, dreadlock creation solutions have also improved!
The protocol for natural dreadlock creation using a dread perm technique is as follows: section, form, base tie, rod wind, saturate and rinse.
Brand new *baby* natural dreads can be created within 4-6 hours with an average head, meaning average density, texture, and length.
Your soft baby dreads will firm up over the next several months and take form over the next couple years…This is to say that the dreadlocks of your dreams are probably a few years away. The dread perm is a way to begin the process.
I use string at the base *base tie* of all your new sections so that you begin shed collection immediately. The string acts as a binder to catch all your hair shed inside it’s coinciding lock. I recommend you receive base tie maintenance every 2 months or 1 inch of natural growth. Average quantity for average maintenance (approx 50 give or take), of well-maintained locks, take about an hour to base tie.
To reiterate what a dreadlock is: a dreadlock is merely a lock of natural hair plus natural hair shed that hardens cohesively over time. The base tie string assists with binding, shape, and direction while locks harden. The chemical process is one very efficient and effective means of starting the locking process.
At first the natural dreads have a slight bend to them because of how they form around the perm rod, Whether you like it or not, that curl goes away…often pretty quickly, but sometimes it lingers…You can flat iron your new dreads when they are completely dry. As the natural shed hair begins to harden and take hold in the locks however, a curl shape really can’t exist as well. The perm rods serve an important purpose of maintaining proper, even tension on your hair as the bonds are being reformed during the dread perm process.
