Mossy Olive custom toning process

Partial Head custom synth dread service

I created 20 synth dreads from shapeshifter mono fiber in a palette specific to this client’s request. The length is 18-22 inch and colors are Chestnut, Walnut, and Irish Cream.  This service took about 3 hours total from start to finish  and we used 16 of the 20 synth dreads created. I pre created the synth dreads, which required a couple of hours for shuffling the colors as well as to blend, sculpt and seal the fiber. Everything I use must be pinch braid attachable, so I create my stock according to client’s specs.

It took about an hour to section this arrangement and attach each piece. I used a matching color of string to adhere the synth dreads to the hair. The pinch braid method uses NO glues, NO metal, No elastics… just string and skill.

I recommend maintenance every 6 weeks if natural locking/matting or other combining of the hair is to be avoided. With consistent maintenance, it will only take about 30 – 40 minutes to tighten this arrangement.

Using synth dreads to cultivate natural dreads

1 year after install
1 year after install

The top left shows approx 4 inches of natural hair at the longest.

The top right shows a synth dread install. I use a pinch braid attachment method to anchor synth fiber to each section of natural hair. A special type of string closes the attachment. Finally I form and seal each individual synth lock so it sits on top of the natural hair.

The bottom left and right show progress 1 year post original install. The natural locks have been maintained about every 2 months with a base tie at each anchor and tiny amount bulk natural hair fiber to provide seamless cohesion between the synth extension and natural forming lock.

The natural locks have increased in length by more than 6 inches. This client’s hair grows a little faster than the average 1/2 inch a month. I have cut a few inches off the synth length and eventually we will cut the synth length off entirely, though that isn’t necessary, it’s merely a possibility.

There are about 8 colorful synth accent dreads scattered throughout, just for some pants of interest. These are attached with a string sealed pinch braid ( just string and skill hold these extensions on) They are tightened, or moved back to the scalp, every couple months along with maintenance. The extensions grow away from the scalp by about 1/2 inch a month or along with the growth cycle of your natural hair. They will stay in place if never tightened and continue to grow out long with your natural hair or they the string can be carefully cut at any time and the extension can be gently and easily removed. You can save your extensions to be re attached in the future.

Do not cut the extension, ONLY cut the string for proper removal.

Natural dreads take a very very very long time to form. There are no short cuts, not even a dread perm, not even a full head of crochet…All these are means of beginning the shed trapping process.

Dreadlocks are the result of hardened compacted natural shed hair that has combined with actively growing hair on your hair. Think “SHED LOCK”. Lock of shed hair. Hair grows at the rate of 1/2 inch a month on average. Therefore, 12 inches of natural dread lock length will take about 2 years to cultivate.

Wearing synth dread extensions is a way to trap shed and form dreadlocks while you appear to already have natural  mature dreadlocks.

Synth dreadlocks can be worn without natural forming of dreadlocks if you maintain professionally at 4-6 week intervals, depending on hair type. Courser, glossier hair textures can maintain less often  without shed compaction and hardening whereas more fine and cottony textures will matte much quicker.
